Money in Uzbekistan: Cash, Cards, and Currency Exchange
When traveling to Uzbekistan, it is important to understand how the monetary system works and which payment methods are most convenient. Although the country is gradually moving towards a cashless economy, cash is still essential.
Cash
The national currency is the Uzbekistani Som (UZS). Everyday transactions — markets, taxis, small shops, and even many cafes — are primarily cash-based. Always keep some bills on hand for convenience.
Bank Cards
In major cities such as Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara, Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants. However, outside tourist areas, card payments are rare. It is best to keep a balance: part of your funds in cash and part on a card.
Currency Exchange
Currency can be exchanged at banks and official exchange offices. Avoid exchanging money on the street — it is illegal and risky. US dollars are most widely accepted, while euros are also exchangeable but less common. Bring newer, undamaged banknotes.
ATMs
ATMs are becoming more common in large cities but remain limited in rural areas. It is wise to withdraw cash in the capital beforehand. ATMs usually dispense Uzbekistani soms and may charge fees.
Travel Tips
